Volvo’s Wireless-Charging Taxi Fleet, with InductEV Technology, Showcased at WORLD OF VOLVO Center in Gothenburg, Sweden
20 Electric Volvo XC40 Vehicles Logged 7,000 Wireless Charging Events, 100MWh Inductive Power Transfer, and 85 Laps Around the Earth
GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN, 13 November 2024 – In another important boost to inductive wireless charging technology for commercial fleets, InductEV today announced that its pioneering three-year program with Volvo Cars is being showcased at the newly opened World of Volvo experience center in the automaker’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden.
Wireless hands-free charging is the only viable, long-term solution for autonomous taxi fleets. Volvo’s use of InductEV’s inductive charging is a notable precursor to a vision of transportation’s future.
Since the start of the Gothenburg Green City Zone project two years ago, 20 electric Volvo XC40 taxis, using InductEV’s wireless, in-ground, on-route charging technology, have logged 7,000 charging events, 100MWh in inductive power transfer, and 85 laps around the earth. The program met or exceeded all expectations, including:
100% uptime on all charging stations
The taxi drivers found the technology convenient and easy to use
No apps, tags, or credit cards were needed for payment
The inductive charging worked without fail in rain, snow, hot, cold, dirt, and icy conditions
Volvo Cars selected the pilot taxi program to be showcased at World of Volvo, the new, 237,000 sq ft. experience center in the center of Gothenburg. It is described as “a meeting place in constant motion filled with innovative, inspiring, and entertaining experiences.”
“Volvo Cars and its hometown city of Gothenburg have been tremendous partners in putting our inductive charging technology to the test,” added John Rizzo, President and CEO of InductEV. “We are glad it lived up to their expectations and honored to have it showcased as one of the many compelling displays on the future-forward World of Volvo.”
